Thames Valley Police

Under the Serious Violence Duty, as found in the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act 2022, police services, local authorities, fire and rescue authorities and specified criminal justice agencies are required to work together to formulate an evidence-based analysis of the causes of serious violence in a local area. Led by Thames Valley Police, ‘Thames Valley Together’ stands as one of the first examples of a local partnership operationalising the new Duty in order to achieve the goal of reducing serious violence.

Zamna

Summary: Zamna’s Verified Passport solution makes it easier for passengers to understand their travel requirements and for an airline to verify this information. Zamna’s products use novel cryptography and distributed ledger technology (‘DLT’) to deliver a data minimising solution for pre-airport checks related to passenger information. Their approach reduces friction for both airlines and passengers whilst maintaining robust levels of passenger verification.

Our Future Health

Summary: Our Future Health aims to be the UK’s largest ever health research programme. It is designed to help people live healthier lives for longer by giving researchers from universities, charities, the NHS and companies involved in health research an opportunity to discover and test more effective ways to predict, detect and treat common diseases such as dementia, cancer, diabetes, heart disease and stroke. The aim is to recruit a cohort of five million adults that truly reflect the UK population to take part in Our Future Health. Participants will be asked to provide information about their health and lifestyles and small samples of their saliva and/or blood. Researchers will use this information to make new discoveries about human health and diseases.

Smart Data Foundry

Smart Data Foundry (previously known as ‘Global Open Finance Centre of Excellence’) is a wholly owned subsidiary of the University of Edinburgh. They are a data innovation organisation that serves the public, private and third sector. Its purpose is to improve people’s lives and inspire financial innovation by safely unlocking the potential of financial data to enable research, innovation and skills development. Smart Data Foundry is developing its National Data Utility (NDU) a technical infrastructure to support data-driven research in addition to creating an innovation environment that uses synthetic data to support innovation across a wide range of use cases.

Crisis UK

Exit date: July 2023

Crisis is the national charity for homeless people, providing help so that people can rebuild their lives and are supported out of homelessness for good. Crisis entered the Sandbox as the lead organisation in a consortium with representatives from homelessness services in local authorities. This group has a broad objective of developing and delivering county-wide data sharing to support the prevention and relief of homelessness. Crisis believe that the creation and use a By-Name-List (‘BNL’) is one way of delivering on this objective.

Betting and Gaming Council

Exit date: July 2023

The Betting and Gaming Council (‘BGC’) entered the Sandbox to explore the gambling industry’s development and trial of a ‘Single Customer View’ (‘SCV’) solution. The trial built on the work previously undertaken by the Gambling Commission within the Sandbox in 2021. The SCV solution being developed by the BGC and the participating operators (Entain, William Hill, 888, Gamesys, Bet365 and Flutter) aimed to enable a more unified and proactive intervention by gambling operators to reduce incidents of gambling related harm. The SCV solution is now publicly branded and known as ‘GamProtect’.

Good With

Exit date: April 2023

Good With, a fintech and edtech start-up, entered the Sandbox as part of its work to develop mobile applications which will help educate young adults on personal finance. It plans to develop a Financial Virtual Assistant (FVA) app which will combine various personal data sources to produce a ‘financial readiness score’. Good With hopes this readiness score will help to provide the FVA’s users (18-24-year-olds), who might struggle to obtain credit via traditional methods, with fairer access to financial products and services. The readiness score will be informed by insights drawn, using Artificial Intelligence, from the user’s interactions with the FVA’s chatbot, their open banking data and their progression through a bespoke educational pathway. The app is currently still in a beta testing phase.
