The University of Oxford’s project examines the privacy needs arising in smart homes and explores the design space required to meet these needs. Building upon previous research into the privacy implications of apps and smart devices, as well as individuals’ awareness of how their data is used and shared, the project will conduct a study of six smart homes to understand current privacy preferences, prototype new tools, interfaces, and approaches to smart home privacy. The project team will also work with smart home designers, product teams and compliance officers to understand how these alternative design approaches might be integrated into their ‘data protection by design’ processes and disseminate the resulting best practices.
The project is set to complete in May 2020.
